You will be given 5 records to enter into the cataloging system you have chosen.
  • You will be cataloging these titles at the 2nd level of cataloging. Not every field from the 2nd level of cataloging from that exercise will be filled in because not all of the information will be available but fill in as much as you can of the following fields depending on what information is available.

  • You are going to pretend that these are hard-bound books that you have in your hand rather than digital copies of the books. Not all of the "books" have their dimensions available -- again not all of the information for the fields listed above will be available. If I have not included some information about the book (e.g. ISBN) you do not need to search for it. Use the information you have. In all instances look at the copy of the book. Depending on the holder of the information you may have to click on the <Full View> to see a representation of the book itself that will give you complete information about the book.

  • Each of these books has been completely digitized. Scroll through the books, just as you would flip through the book if you had the hard copy. Look for all of the information that you can find to add to the MARC record.

  • Besides your own cataloging, by all means look for any source you can find that may have already cataloged the material. I absolutely believe that COPY CATALOGING is a school librarian’s best friend.
    • Beware of copying information from another library that is information that is from a different edition than the book I have assigned. I will deduct points from your assignment if you include information that is from a DIFFERENT EDITION than the one I have given you to catalog. If you are using a copy cataloging source, it is your responsibility to match up the information in the record you are perusing to the item I am asking you to catalog.

    • For my class, every item you catalog MUST include a 520 $a (summary) field. The other fields will be determined by the information that is available. In order to get a summary it may mean you have to scan the book, read the introduction or the covers, etc. to know what the book is about. In your real library life you would get a summary easily form the book flap. In my class every item cataloged MUST HAVE A SUMMARY. Keep in mind why you are cataloging this item in the first place – so students can find material relevant to their needs. What student is going to pick up something to read from a catalog record that doesn’t tell the student what the item is about. This is particularly true in fiction but also holds true for non-fiction. Summaries do not have to be lengthy but should tell the student what the main thrust of the item is about.


ASSIGNMENT - CATALOG THESE SIX BOOKS - I've given you enough of the book to give you an idea of what it would be like to catalog the item as if you were holding it in your hand.

The following two books have information within the book that would be helpful to the patron if it was in the MARC record itself. So often information is lost to the patron because the MARC records are so brief. Collections of material (short story collections, poetry collections, collected biographies) are all examples where the individuals or individual titles need to be highlighted and this information would be placed in the 505 (Formatted Contents Note). Here is a brief slide presentation giving you examples.

After you have created the MARC version of these records export the file and upload it to the appropriate link in the ASSIGNMENTS link on Blackboard.

PROTOCOL FOR TURNING IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT
        1. The file name of your records must end in .001 - I will deduct 5 points from your score if you do not do this -- because I will have to go in an manually assign the correct file extension in order to read your assignment.
        2. Please use this format for naming your assignment to turn in -- last name.001 -- e.g. Pentlin.001
        3. Because I will print out your assignments in order to grade them I would like for you to add the MARC tag: 887 to each of your records. The information that I want you to place in this 887 $a is your last name. (The 887 field is for Non-MARC information) It will look like this: 887 $a Pentlin

        4. BestMARC people: You will "Finish" and then "Download" your records. Because BestMARC is still in beta, there is no way to select just the records for this week to be "Finished" -- everything you have done so far will come across in the file. I will ignore all of the other records and just concentrate on the ones assigned for this week.
        5. BestMARC people: After you have "Finished" and "Download" your Catalog section will be empty. That is consistent with the fact that BestMARC does not import records as this time and once the records have been finished and downloaded they can no longer be modified. If you have made a mistake in your cataloging and you want to send me the correction before 11:59 pm Monday you will need to re-type the record again and send it to me as an e-mail attachment.
        6. MARC Magician people: If you discover a mistake you want to correct before 11:59 pm Monday, you will need to send me the file in an e-mail attachment if you have already uploaded your assignment. You can simply correct the error in the MARC record without having to completely redo the record as the BestMARC people will have to do.
